The William M. Lapenta Internship Program provides full-time summer internships lasting 10 weeks (early June to mid-August), offering a $6,000 stipend, furnished housing, and a travel allowance. Interns participate in projects such as improving forecasting tools, developing data analysis techniques, and enhancing NOAA communication strategies, all while gaining hands-on experience aligned with NOAA’s mission.

The SOARS Program (Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science) is an undergraduate-to-graduate program built around a 10-week summer research internship, mentoring by top scientists, and a supportive learning community for diverse students studying science, math, engineering, and other related fields. SOARS also offers financial support for academics and conference attendance.

The Pathways Program offers federal internship and employment opportunities for current students, recent graduates and those with an advanced degree.

Participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. and currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at a U.S. college or university (this includes remaining enrolled within an undergraduate degree program throughout the duration of the REU program).

Undergraduates are invited to apply for a ten-week research program hosted by the Georgia Tech School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) during Summer 2027.Working under the supervision of a faculty member or research scientist, participants will focus on a single research project but also gain a broad perspective on research in the earth and atmospheric sciences by participating in a dynamic research environment. This interdisciplinary REU program has projects spanning topics related to the geosciences, planetary science, atmospheric sciences, oceanography, and climate science. In addition to full time research, undergraduate researchers will participate in a number of professional development activities, seminars with faculty and research scientists, presentation and research poster symposiums, and social activities with other summer REU students.

Participants will receive a stipend of $7,000, travel allowances, and apartment-style housing on the Georgia Tech campus.

Undergraduates from any U.S. institution

Ten weeks of paid, mentored climate research at Penn State, open to undergraduates from any U.S. institution.

Each summer a cohort of students comes to University Park to work one-on-one with a faculty advisor on a real research problem – from the physics of the atmosphere, oceans, and cryosphere to climate modeling, wildfire, water, and the human systems climate change touches. You help design the study, collect and analyze the data, and present what you found, first to scientists and then to a general audience. Most students arrive having never presented research before. All of them leave having done it.The program runs from late May to late July and ends with a public poster symposium. Students receive a stipend, housing, and travel support; details are on the application page. No prior research experience is required, and students from institutions without graduate programs are strongly encouraged to apply.

Pursuing an undergraduate degree, graduating no sooner than December after the summer they participate, and a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident of the U.S.

We have an exciting summer research program that pairs undergraduate students with research mentors to conduct a project in the wide-ranging meteorology, climate, radar engineering, geography, environmental sustainability, and interdisciplinary topics being researched here. Our mentors come from all of the University of Oklahoma’s Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences, as well as related organizations in and around the University Research Campus. Students are paid a stipend, have free housing, a travel allowance to/from Norman, OK, and travel allowance to present their work at the national conference that best suits them.
