Methane Hydrate for Fuel

© 2002 Eugene S. Takle

Arctic tundra has vast stores of methane hydrate (methane trapped in ice-like crystals) that could potentially be exploited as an untapped energy source. Although costly at current energy rates, hydrates might become more economical as fuel prices rise. Adams (2002) describes the recent interest in methane hydrate as a possible fuel. The US National Methane Hydrate Program has a website: http://www.netl.doe.gov/scng/hydrate.
