The search for alternatives to fossil fuels for energy production has stimulated a new look at nuclear power. Butler (2004) provides a status report of new technologies being proposed for expanded use of nuclear power, which produces no greenhouse gases. Despite the fact that no new nuclear power plants have been built since the partial meltdown of the Three-Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania in 1979, research on safer plants has continued. Bulter (2004) asserts that to be acceptable, nuclear power still has to be demonstrated to be safer, cheaper, and cleaner.
