Increased Freshwater in the Ross Sea

© 2002 Eugene S. Takle

The Ross Sea receives meltwater from the Ross Ice shelf, a major continental glacier on Antarctica. Measurements by Jacobs et al (2002) over the last four decades reveal a trend toward decreased salinity. This enhancement of freshwater is a result of a combination of factors including increased precipitation, reduced sea-ice production, and increased melting of the West Antarctic sheet. These factors are consistent with an acceleration of global warming.
