Laurence et al. (2004) report deforestation rates for Amazonia from 1990 through 2003 and conclude that deforestation rates continue to climb duce to continued expansion of systems of highways, roads, power lines, gas lines, hydroelectric reservoirs, railroads and river channelization. The annual loss of forest in 2002 and 2003 was 2.4 million hectares. Laurence et al. (2004) calculate that this is equivalent to 11 football fields per minute.
