Evidence of Climate Connections to the Return of Infectious Diseases
- Outbreaks of malaria, eastern equine encephalitis (NE U.S.), waterborne
disease outbreaks, i.e., typhoid, Hepatitis A, bacillary dysentery
(Chile and Peru), and new appearances of harmful algal blooms (Asia and
North America) are correlated with El Nino events. Further, cholera
appears to be similarly associated with El Nino events (Bangladesh and
South America).
- Research Reports have linked a 1°C increase in the average
temperature in Rwanda in 1987 to a 337% rise in the incidence of
malaria in that year.
