In reality, the MPX sounding won because the tornadoes that occurred nearby occurred during the day. The Kansas "tornado" was a weak landspout, and many of the wind reports, along with nearly all the hail reports that came from Kansas occurred after dark, as well as did every severe report in Iowa. Thus, the OAX sounding was associated with no severe convection (nearest severe report was >100 mi away), and the only convection that developed near the TOP sounding developed much later in the night.
