Radar allows us to show where storms are occurring
and their strength. A new generation of radars called Doppler radar
has replaced WSR-57 (Weather Service Radar 1957) radars. These Doppler
radars are given the name NEXRAD which stands for Next Generation Radar.
These new radars improve the ability of a forecaster to identify where
severe weather, such as heavy rain, hail, or tornadoes, is occurring.
This technology shows dramatic improvement over the WSR-57
radars.
