Introduction
We have devoted considerable attention to trace gases (including water vapor) in
the atmosphere, their sources, sinks, lifetimes and vertical distribution.
We now are prepared to examine the influence of these seemingly insignificant
amounts of gas on the energy balance of our planet. First, we examine what we
mean by energy balance.
