School Talks

Each year, members of the Iowa State Chapter of the American Meteorological society visit local school to participate in school talks and science nights. Members speak to high school and grade school students about meteorology and its applications. Through a variety of hands on activities such as building barometers and anemometers, students are given an opportunity to examine real physical applications of meteorology. For each talk, the chapter brings its own tornado machine, built by members of the chapter, to show students a small scale version of a tornado. This is always a favorite activity for each visit.

In addition to visiting area schools, the AMS chapter also helps out with the Science Bound program. Des Moines area high school students come to Iowa State University, and chapter members demonstrate the tornado machine and show storm chase videos. Students participating in Science Bound also have the unique opportunity to experiment with the virtual tornado simulator which is on over 20 computers in the Meteorology Department
