Welcome to my Meteorology Student Portfolio!

Hello! My name is Peter Effertz. Welcome to my portfolio. This is a nice service of Iowa State University's Meteorology program, where I graduated in the fall of 2012. This website is meant to showcase myself, my goals, and my skills. Currently, I am employed at Virginia’s Department of Environmental Quality’s Office of Air Quality Monitoring. Weather + Technology

I have a passion for instrumentation and technology. I have a Davis Vantage Pro 2 that I set up with a Raspberry Pi in my backyard. You can read more about how I set it up here. You can see the data from it here. I also consider myself proficient in the following software programs:

  • AWIPS/GEMPAK
  • NetCDF
  • Computer Science

    I am porficient in Python and FORTRAN, and am at least familiear with R and Java. I also have done some work in GIS (Esri ArcMap and QGIS) for Virginai DEQ. See my projects and research page for expamles of my work.

    Weather Analysis

    Most of all, I love using technology further understand Meteorology. As part of my Senior Thesis, I tracked "Atmospheric Bombs" (cyclones that intensify the most rapidly) The above picture shows a sample of bombs over the Northwest Pacific.
